Sentinel Spectrum Chews are used to prevent heartworm disease, control flea populations and control intestinal worms in dogs. Regular treatment with Sentinel provides long term protection and control of flea infestations, and aids in the treatment of flea allergy dermatitis in dogs.

Sentinel Spectrum Chews, recently approved by FDA in 2012, is an enhanced version on the traditional Sentinel Flavor Tabs. The new product adds the anthelmintic praziquantel to the existing Sentinel formula, allowing for treatment and control of tapeworms. This increases the cost by an extra $3/dose compared to the old Sentinel Tab. So do expect the product to be more "expensive".

For prevention of heartworm and control of intestinal worms, dogs should be treated with Sentinel every month, preferably on the same date. Heartworm is transmitted via mosquitoes, therefore the first dose of Sentinel should be given within one month of the start of the mosquito season and monthly until the end of the season for effective heartworm prevention. For best results in terms of flea control, give Sentinel throughout the year without interruption. Note: Growing puppies may gain sufficient weight during the course of treatment to require an increased dose of Sentinel before a packet has been consumed. A veterinarian should be consulted for appropriate dosing instructions for puppies.

The lufenuron in Sentinel inhibits the development of flea eggs into adults; it does not have any action in killing the adult fleas. Concurrent use of other products effective in killing adult fleas may be necessary for complete flea control. All animals in the household should be treated for fleas for full efficacy of the product. If a high adult flea burden is present at the start of treatment with Sentinel Spectrum, administer a product registered for use against adult fleas until the adult flea population is reduced. Initially, treatment of the pet's environment may also be recommended for severe flea infestations.

Heartgard vs Sentinel

We have used this product on our dogs for many, many years. I love that it is not topical and does not rub off on kids etc. The product is highly effective and controls fleas in addition to the other internal parasites which makes it more affordable than using two products! I am anxiously awaiting the return of this product. Thank heavens I stocked up on it while it was still available! My dogs have never had any ill effects.

Paddington, our miniature schnauzer, has taken Sentinel for all of his life. We also used the medicine for the two schnauzers we owned previously. Never a problem and effective for over 10 years. Our only concern is the difficulty of administering the pill. Paddy spits it out. Evidently he doesn't like the taste. Also the size makes it almost impossible to find once he spits it out. If only the pill could be a little larger and chewy! Things would be so much easier!

We have been using Sentinel for at least 15 years for our dogs. Living in SE Texas, mosquitoes are an ongoing fact of life as are fleas. Since using Sentinel, none of our dogs have had any side effects, fleas, or heartworm. This includes Bailey, our 13 year old Cardigan Welsh Gorgi. Good product.

Sentinel has worked well for all of our dogs and our dogs before this group. None have ever gotten heartworms, fleas or ticks who came to us healthy. We have three large mixed breed rescue dogs. A Rottweiler/Pit, a Heeler/Pit and a Husky/Golden mix. The Husky/Golden was Heartworm positive when I first pulled her from the shelter to foster her, so, we initially had her on Heartgard Plus and Comfortis as part of the slow-kill method for her Heartworm disease. She is now Heartworm negative so all 3 are on Sentinel alone. I love this product as it does all in one and it is not greasy on their backs when the children have their faces on the dogs. Much cleaner while still being effective.
